Ben Mee
Leaving an idyllic life in the South of France for South Devon was never part of Ben Mee’s plan. But, when his 76 year old mother Amelia fell in love with a house at the centre of a run down Devon zoo, Ben found himself taking the helm, re-building the business and getting to know some rather wild neighbours!
The story of how Dartmoor Zoo was saved and reopened has already been the subject of a major BBC television documentary. American actors Matt Damon is currently playing Ben in the making of a Hollywood dramatisation of Ben’s memoir.
Ben says as soon as they came to view the property at Sparkwell, just outside Plymouth, he knew it was the place for him. “I just fell in love with the area and was completely taken with its beauty. I couldn’t believe that within 20 minutes from my new front door I could find woodland, beaches, a bustling city, tranquil rivers and green open space! It’s much greener here than in France. I love the green trees and the moss on their bark, a mark of clean healthy air.”
Ben is swept away by the magic of Plymouth every time he looks out across the Sound. “Plymouth is an amazing, historical city” he said, “I just love the history here. Standing on the Hoe, in the shadow of great historical figures such as Drake and Nelson, you can imagine how they passed through the cobbled streets along the quayside, recruiting men for their ships from the Barbican’s bars and watering holes.”
As well as being steeped in history, Plymouth also offers a fantastic work life balance and a chance to really connect with nature. “There is a beautiful symbiosis between people and their environment down here. So many livelihoods are dependent on the natural environment – farming, fishing, tourism – that people love it, respect it and take care of it. Walk down by the quayside when the fishing boats come in and you will know what I mean, as surprisingly tame seals scout for stray fish and the trawlermen make sure they never leave disappointed.”
Since moving to Plymouth in 2006 Ben has seen some real improvements, not only at his zoo, which re-opened to the public in [date] but also in the city around him. “When we first arrived the Drake Circus shopping centre had only just opened. Following this we have seen new cafes, restaurants and bars opening. The city has a real sense of energy about it” said Ben. “There is a real focus on looking forward and improving; a sense of positivity and optimism which is infectious.”
