Ella Romanos

To some, Plymouth might not seem the most likely location for a cutting edge creative software company, but as Ella Romanos, MD of Remode tells us, for her it was the most logical place to start.

Having lived in various locations around the world, including Africa and Miami, Ella first came to Devon when she was 18 years old, to attend art college in Plymouth. From there Ella went to the University of Plymouth where she studied for a BSc in Digital Art and Technology.

“I loved Plymouth when I arrived here as a student. It offers a great quality of life with beautiful beaches and moors close by. When I graduated there were no jobs in the gaming and software industry around here. So I joined forces with two fellow University of Plymouth Graduates to form Remode in 2008 and created the opportunity to stay.”

When setting up the new business Ella discovered some advantages to basing Remode in Plymouth. Ella said: “The city is really focused on economic growth so we had a lot of support including links to funding and investment opportunities.”

Although it’s less than a decade since Ella first came to Plymouth as a student, she has seen the city change quite dramatically. She said: “Plymouth has improved a lot since I first arrived. It has a great theatre and some fantastic restaurants and bars. There is still a lot more than can be done to make the city a better place to live and work but there is definitely a new energy here which I hope will continue to grow.”

Remode launched its first game ‘Mole Control’ in 2010 and the company’s future is looking bright. “The plan is to grow Remode in Plymouth” said Ella, “There are not enough creative software jobs down here and that makes it challenging for graduates. As Remode grows I hope to be able to provide more jobs in the city so creative people who love this area get the chance to live and work here too.”
